Avizo, what a way to start the show. Robert and the guys did a hell of a show. The legends were great, hit after hit belted out by Carlos Guzman, Sunny Ozuna, Agustine Ramirez and Freddy Martinez. But that was expected, what wasnt expected was Avizos new vocalist "GQ" Cris Quirioga. He has a super voice, evident in his performance> and his voice on Avizos rendition of "Your Still A Young Man" was powerful and soulful. You got to hear this young man yourself.

Jay Perez, the voice, super super show {and i gotta add this footnote} had Avizos horn section backing him up making the band a much more full sound. I wish he would use a horn section at every performance.

Avizo.....what a way to start the show.....they blew it up to start the show.
The Legends did it old-school style, and with Avizo backing them up, they were in top form.

I would also like to say that AVIZO was awesome, plus they backed up Jay Perez. I have seen Jay 6 times over the last few years and would like to say I think that was his best performance that I have seen.

Houston based band, AVIZO is proud to announce that have a new lead vocalist on their team. Chris Quiroga will be the new front man for one of Houston’s most successful and hardest working groups. Known to his friends as Chris Q., Chris was the lead vocalist for another Houston based group named F7.

Robert Dorantes, bandleader for AVIZO states, “Chris Q adds more depth to our band. His versatility will be a great asset for us, because Chris sings in Spanish as well as he does in English. He is young, soulful and energetic. We are very excited about adding Chris Q to AVIZO. ”

Congrats to Houston’s Powerhouse AVIZO and Jay Perez;
It was a secret until Sunday afternoon until around
5:45pm.
Jay Perez invited H-Town's AVIZO’s Powerhouse Horn Section to enhance the show. And the horn section delivered with the Band and of course The Voice, Jay Perez who blew the roof off the Reliant Stadium Sunday evening. Jay had a 4 piece horn section sharing the stage. The Great White Tejano Hope and legend, Lonnie La Lane led the horn section with AVIZO bandleader, Robert Dorantes on 2nd trumpet, Sal Gonzales on Trombone, and Tory Trevino on Sax. The show was tight and nonstop.
Jay kicked it off with horn laced hits from the Breed and DLG and then his own monster hits. The show ended with the horn driven hits of “Suavecito” and “Together”. Jay put on the show of his life. The crowd was a majority Tejano. You could tell by the roar of the crowd when certain hit songs hit the hearts of the crowd. Jay took someone’s advice and left “Me and Ms Jones” at home. Good move Jay. Jay kept the crowd pumped.
Great job, Jay. You made us proud.

Perez, Ayala keep with Tejano tradition
By JOEY GUERRA
For The Chronicle

Traditions old and new shared the Reliant Stadium stage Sunday evening for Rodeo Houston's annual Go Tejano Day performance.

The dynamic double bill of Jay Perez and King of the Accordion Ramon Ayala was like a crash course in regional, Spanish-language music from both sides of the border. Perez infuses his slick Tejano catalog with a decidedly contemporary sensibility, while norteņo titan Ayala upholds the genre's traditional sound.

Perez hit the rotating stage first for an energetic 40-minute set that barely left breathing room between songs. He also showcased tracks he recorded as the lead singer for the Latin Breed and David Lee Garza y los Musicales. A tight horn section, frisky keyboards and the requisite accordion provided the solid musical backdrop.

The oft-covered “Tejano Enamorado” received a warm reception, as did “Suavecito”, a bilingual R&B track. The highlight, however, was Perez's own strong, smooth baritone, which has earned him the nickname "The Voice."

Ayala, on the other hand, is steeped in the barrooms and ballrooms flavor of traditional norteņo music. A cold beer and a dancing partner are practically required to enjoy the music.

Dressed in bright-red blazers and cowboy hats, Ayala and his Bravos del Norte humbly walked onstage, smiled at the crowd and simply began to play.

A well-versed emcee introduced each song and thanked the crowd after each round of applause.

Classic hits “Tragos de Amargo Licor “and “Un Rinconcito en el Cielo” incited enthusiastic singalongs and plenty of raised glasses during an impressive 55-minute set.

Liz'  Picks For Best Tejano Album
Avizo - Power of Friends -  The group deserves a nomination for the same reason as stated for Los Cruizer. The incorporation of conjunto sound with modern orchestra is dynamite.
Joe's  Picks For Best Tejano Album
Avizo - Power of Friends - Much like Joel Guzman’s Gritos y Acordeones CD, Avizo stuffs Power of Friends with a star studded guest list;  Jay Perez, Little Joe, Ruben Ramos, David Marez, Agustin Ramirez and Rudy Rincon.  The surprise is Tracy Perez singing songs Corazon De Piedra and Nunca Jamas.

Check out these kind words from Tejano Mike.
Mr. Robert L. Dorantes,

TEJANOmike here again!, pero no, the HONOR is all mine in putting your hit song on my homepage. You know, I left for the Tejano FanFair in a rush from here in Phoenix AZ that I didn't give you the credits for the sound clip. I have just added your name/info at the bottom of the my homepage and now it reflects your credits to your music arrangement.

And thank you also for writing.

Mr. Dorantes, allow me to say a few things. I used to play tejano music for years and years, both in Texas growing up and in California for over 40 years; with different bands/groups as you probably know the story of a musician. But, in today's world of tejano music there are tejano groups, and then there are REAL TEJANO GROUPS!! You and your band rate in my view, as the best band I've heard in many years, and none match your artistic caliber and showmanship that you deliver. You are indeed a one-of-a-kind band that excels in finesse' and experience. You make us all proud to be tejanos one more time; you give us joy to our hearts; you make our tejano world bright and beautiful......and you make us dance and feel young again!!! Simply outstanding. I normally don't sponsor or credit too many bands, but yours is well deserving of all this.

I commend you and your band for a super job and performance well done; applause and cheers to all of you gentlemen for a superb band. There are a lot of tejano bands to choose from, but only one damn good tejano band.........AVIZO!!

Yours truly,

TEJANOmike

Best Tejano/Orchestra (Five or More with Keyboards)

Houston's Powerhouse a.k.a. AVIZO

The group's multiple names give you some indication of their sound. Sounds, actually. Houston's Powerhouse is a party band playing pop, R&B and rock tunes; AVIZO plays traditional Tejano and Mexican music with some salsa thrown in. The group also acts as the no-name backup band for Latin music pioneers such as Augustine Ramirez and Sonny Ozuna. Same guys, different sounds. Founder-trumpeter Robert Dorantes says, "I don't like the Tejano label because we basically do everything. Not that I'm ashamed of the label, because that's where we started, but we work hard at other types of music, too. We try to be an all-around group."

Powerhouse/AVIZO is putting together a CD called 20, to celebrate their 20th anniversary together. Longtime friends and Tejano stars Little Joe and Jay Perez joined the group for the recording. -- Olivia Flores Alvarez

Critic's pick: Houston's Powerhouse a.k.a. AVIZO
